Instructional Designer
Department/Division: Information Technology
Classification: L2 - Technical Analyst Specialist
Status: Full-time, exempt, new
Normal Work Schedule: M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Job Summary: Work collaboratively with BW faculty, staff, and students in the production of supplemental materials for traditional classroom-based, hybrid, and online courses. Position is located at the Instructional Technology Education Center (ITec) in the basement of the Student Activities Center (SAC) and reports to the Director of Educational Technology Services, Distance Learning and Information Services.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: The following outlines the essential functions of the position and is not to be considered a detailed description of all duties inherent in the position.
* Develop and provide recommendations for interface design, sequencing of instruction, use of assessments, and design of course materials and activities for live, hybrid, and online courses
* Co-manage and maintain a training program for faculty certification in teaching hybrid and online courses (elements include one-on-one, small class, online, and workshop)
* Co-manage and continue to develop a university-wide comprehensive training program for faculty, staff, and students in academic and non-academic technologies such as Microsoft Office, web applications, and general productivity tools (elements include live or online instruction and support documentation)
* Attend local, regional, and national conferences, seminars, and workshops (when appropriate, funds permitting) to continually explore new technologies intended for instructional application
* Construct the requirements for a new student assistant position within the department to provide additional support to the instructional designers
* Support faculty in the development, integration, and assessment of instructional technologies used in the classroom
* Plan, develop and teach faculty development workshops and other activities related to instructional design and in the use of specific instructional technology tools
* Plan and produce designs for instructional materials
* Communicate frequently and effectively with various project collaborators to ensure that goals and objectives are being fulfilled
* Provide periodic (weekly/monthly) reports on course development projects
* Manage, train, and coordinate student assistants in the multimedia lab who work collaborative with faculty to develop instructional materials
Qualifications:
* Master's degree in Instructional Technology, Computer Science, or related field preferred
* Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in the support and use of technology
* Minimum of 3 years experience in delivering computing, information, and instructional technology support services
* Experience assisting professionals (faculty, subject matter experts) on designing, delivering, and evaluating online courses (fully online or hybrid)
* Knowledge of current instructional theories and principles applicable to Web-based instructional design, multimedia technologies, and course management tools
* In-depth knowledge of application software and hardware used to support instruction
* Experience using Blackboard Learning Management System is highly desirable (or optionally, other LMS products such as Moodle, Desire2Learn, Angel)
* Experience using Adobe products: Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, and Captivate, as well as synchronous tools such as WebEx and Adobe Connect
* Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
* Intermediate proficiency in HTML
* Basic knowledge of streaming audio and video
* Demonstrated interpersonal, analytical and verbal/written communications skills
* Strong organizational skills
* Ability to work collaboratively within an academic community
* Ability to manage and meet deadlines
* Ability to interpret client needs and produce instructional materials
* Proven ability to continually adapt and learn new procedures and software programs
* Other duties as assigned by the Director of Educational Technology and the CIO
Working Conditions and Physical Effort: Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. No or very limited physical effort required. No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
